The centuries-old history of the castle

The construction of the castle in Wiśnicz began in the mid-14th century, when Jan Kmita developed the surrounding estates, creating an extensive key of landed estates around Wiśnicz. The castle, built in the Gothic style, was not only a fortress, but also an administrative, cultural and economic centre of the region. Over the years, the castle changed owners. After Piotr Kmita's death in 1553, the residence passed into the hands of the Barz family, and later the Stadnicki family. In 1593, the Wiśnicz estate was acquired by Sebastian Lubomirski, who gave the castle a new shine.

The largest reconstruction of the castle was carried out by Stanisław Lubomirski in the years 1615-1621. Under his leadership, the castle gained defensive bastions in the New Italian style, changing its form to a more modern fortress. The construction of a pentagonal defensive platform and the construction of a monumental entrance gate in the style of a triumphal arch introduced early Baroque elements to the castle's architecture. At that time, a new castle chapel was also built, a small but impressive example of Baroque dome architecture.

After the death of Stanisław Lubomirski in the 17th century, the castle passed into the hands of subsequent owners, and its history was no longer so peaceful. As a result of the partitions of Poland, the Swedish war, fires and neglect, Wiśnicz gradually fell into decline. In the 19th century, after a great fire, the castle fell into ruin. However, in the 20th century, the first renovation works began, which aimed to save this magnificent building.
