Beginnings in the Shadow of the Middle Ages

The history of Czocha Castle begins in 1247, when, on the orders of the Czech King Wenceslas I, construction of a stone fortress began on a strategic hill. However, even before the construction of the brick castle, there was a wooden defensive stronghold in this place, the existence of which is confirmed by references from 1241, describing this place as a border point called Mons Tizow. In the mid-13th century, probably thanks to Wenceslas I himself or his son Przemysł II Ottokar, the era of the brick fortress began. There are also hypotheses suggesting that the founder could have been one of the princes of Świdnica-Jawor, for whom a strong border fortress would be a significant reinforcement of influence in Upper Lusatia.

Over the following centuries, Czocha Castle changed hands, reflecting the complicated history of the Silesian lands. From 1319, for almost 70 years, it was ruled by the Piast princes Henry I Jaworski and Bolko II Mały, who contributed to its expansion and strengthening. Then, the stronghold returned to Czech rule, becoming a fiefdom managed by powerful knightly families, both Czech and German. Among them, the von Nostitz family deserves special attention, which ruled the castle for almost 250 years, from the mid-15th to the early 18th century.

New Chapter

One of the most dramatic moments in the history of Czocha Castle was the year 1793, when a mysterious fire broke out during the absence of the then owner. The fire consumed a large part of the castle, irreversibly destroying the richly equipped library with unique old prints, valuable furniture and the entire armoury. Despite the destruction, the castle was rebuilt, although its appearance underwent some changes, gaining baroque elements.

At the beginning of the 20th century, in 1909, the dilapidated stronghold was purchased for the considerable sum of 1.5 million marks by the Dresden cigar manufacturer, Ernst Gütschow. This wealthy entrepreneur, fascinated by history and architecture, decided to restore the castle to its former glory. With the help of Berlin architect Bodo Ebhardt, Gütschow carried out an extensive renovation and reconstruction, giving it an appearance reminiscent of the period around 1703, combining historical elements with the romantic vision of a medieval fortress.
