Dunajec Castle in Niedzica is a medieval castle from the 14th century, picturesquely situated on Lake Czorsztyn. It is famous for the legend of the Inca treasure and picturesque views. Today it is a popular tourist attraction.

Niedzica Castle: Witness to History, Films and Legends
The "Dunajec" Castle in Niedzica was built in the first half of the 14th century by Kokosz Berzewicz. Its purpose was to defend the northern border of the Kingdom of Hungary. Although Niedzica found itself within the borders of Poland after World War I, the castle remained in the hands of Hungarian families until 1943. Over the centuries, the stronghold was rebuilt many times, and its last owners were the Salamon family. Thanks to the efforts of the Management of the Restoration of the Royal Castle on Wawel and the Ministry of Culture and Art, in 1950 the castle came under the care of the Association of Art Historians, which to this day takes care of its condition and makes it available to visitors.

The film lineage and secrets of the castle
Niedzica Castle has survived to this day in very good condition. Its picturesque location and historical character have therefore attracted the attention of filmmakers. In 1955, the castle became a film set for Aleksander Fredro's "Zemsta". In 1975, "Mazepa" was filmed here, based on Juliusz Słowacki's drama. The castle also hosted the crews of the series "Janosik" and "Wakacje z duchami".
One of the greatest mysteries associated with the castle is the history of the Inca "kipu" - a knotted rope that supposedly contains information about hidden treasure. The "kipu" was found in the castle just after World War II, adding an aura of mystery to it.

Niedzica Castle Today
The castle houses a museum and guest rooms for rent. Visitors can admire interior designs from past eras, such as prison dungeons with a torture chamber, the chambers of the Spisz county governor, the guard room or the rooms of the Salamon family. Archaeological finds and old photographs are presented in the historical halls. The viewing terraces offer beautiful views of the picturesque surroundings.
In addition to the castle, tourists can visit the Coach House with a collection of historic horse-drawn vehicles from 1900-1939 and the Granary with an exhibition of Spisz folk art.
