Roots and Transformations: From the Piast Castle to the Baroque Residence

The history of the palace begins in the 13th century, when Prince Przemko built a Piast stronghold here. Over the following centuries, the castle underwent numerous reconstructions, changing owners and architectural styles. The key moment was the 17th century, when Albrecht von Wallenstein, an outstanding commander and politician, bought the Duchy of Żagań and began building a new, baroque residence. His vision was continued by the Lobkowicz family, giving the palace its current, impressive shape.

The 19th century was a time of prosperity for the palace, associated with the figure of Duchess Dorota de Talleyrand-Périgord. This outstanding woman, known for her intellect and love of art, made Żagań a cultural center, collecting valuable works and hosting distinguished guests. Unfortunately, the 20th century brought difficult times to the palace. During World War II, the building served as a military hospital, and after the war it was devastated. However, thanks to conservation work undertaken in the second half of the 20th century, the palace regained its former glory.

The Palace Today: A Fusion of History and Culture

Currently, the Palace in Żagań serves as the Żagań Palace of Culture, becoming a place where history meets culture. Numerous events are organized here: concerts, performances, exhibitions and workshops that attract both residents and tourists. The Palace is not only a monument, but above all a living center that is full of life and culture.

The Żagań Palace of Culture is engaged in cultural education and shaping sensitivity to art, supporting amateur artistic movement and creating conditions for its development, discovering, stimulating and satisfying cultural needs and interests of residents, as well as promoting folklore.

The Palace delights with its Baroque architecture, and its interiors hide many valuable details. The park surrounding it adds charm and creates an ideal place for walks. The Palace in Żagań is not only an architectural monument, but above all a place that combines rich history with dynamically developing culture.
