Czersk, now a charming town surrounded by orchards on a high Vistula escarpment, was once the capital of Czersk Land and the seat of the Mazovian princes, then the property of Polish kings.
People settled in the area thousands of years ago, here trade routes to Pomerania, Ruthenia and Silesia met, here was a closely guarded crossing of the Vistula River.
The medieval Gothic castle in Czersk was built by Prince Janusz the Elder at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries on the site of an earlier castle. Although it has been heavily damaged over the centuries, its lofty towers towering over the surrounding area still testify to the glorious history of Mazovia.
The castle is open to tourists all year round, and is administered by the Cultural Center in Góra Kalwaria.
Magnificent views of the Vistula River valley, space and silence encourage relaxation. It is worth visiting Czersk, the former capital of southern Mazovia, a beautiful place with an unusual history, full of still undiscovered secrets....
