Minneriya National Park

Minneriya National Park, located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, is renowned for its remarkable biodiversity and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. Established in 1997, the park covers an area of approximately 8,890 hectares and is home to a variety of ecosystems, including grasslands, shrublands, and forests. It is particularly famous for its large population of Asian elephants, providing a unique opportunity for wildlife enthusiasts to observe these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.

The park's landscape is characterized by the stunning Minneriya Tank, an ancient reservoir built in the 3rd century AD, which serves as a vital water source for the region and supports a rich diversity of flora and fauna. During the dry season, from July to October, the park attracts hundreds of elephants as they gather around the tank to drink and feed on the lush vegetation that springs up in this period, creating an extraordinary wildlife spectacle known as 'The Gathering'.
