Description
Wilpattu National Park, located on the northwest coast of Sri Lanka, is the largest national park in the country, covering an area of approximately 131,694 hectares. Established in 1938, it is renowned for its natural beauty and diverse ecosystems, including lush forests, scrublands, and numerous lakes, known locally as 'villus'. The park is also home to a wide variety of wildlife, including Sri Lankan leopards, elephants, and numerous bird species, making it a prime destination for nature enthusiasts and wildlife photographers.
The park is characterized by its unique landscape, which includes a series of natural clay depressions that collect rainwater, forming the villus that attract various animals, especially during the dry months. Visitors to Wilpattu can enjoy jeep safaris throughout the park, where they may encounter majestic wildlife in their natural habitats. The absence of large crowds during the off-peak seasons offers a more intimate and tranquil wildlife experience compared to other popular national parks in Sri Lanka.
Wilpattu National Park not only serves as a vital sanctuary for many endangered species but also holds archaeological significance, with ancient ruins and remnants of prehistoric human settlements found within its boundaries. Birdwatchers and eco-tourists are drawn to the park for its rich avifauna, while conservation efforts are in place to preserve its unique environment. Overall, Wilpattu stands out as a remarkable destination that showcases the natural heritage of Sri Lanka.

He landed on the beach at the end of Wilpattu national park with another 700 people in 5th Century BC. He was banished for misconduct in North India and put in a ship and drove them away.
