Description
The Oswiecim Castle Museum began its activities on January 1, 2010, and since then has been performing representative, cultural, as well as educational functions. It is a self-governing cultural institution, entered on 27. 11. 2009, in the register of cultural institutions, kept by the Oświęcim Town Office, under item MZ/3/09, having legal personality and conducting independent financial management. It was established on the basis of Resolution No. LVI/589/09 of the Town Council of Oswiecim dated September 30, 2009.
The mission of the Museum is to popularize the history of the Land of Auschwitz and the heritage of the city, its traditions and culture. To this end, we are engaged in the protection of cultural property, documenting times
past, collecting archaeological, historical and ethnographic exhibits related to Oświęcim and the Land of Oświęcim.
We conduct extensive exhibition and publishing activities. The idea of creating the current permanent museum exhibitions is to show the complex and centuries-old history of the city, which would make it easier for the viewer to find their way around. We cooperate with a great number of museum, educational and cultural institutions in popularizing history. In our vision, we strive to make the museum a place that locals identify with, as well as where tourists reach to learn about the entire page of history. As part of its mission and the protection of cultural heritage, the Castle Museum serves as the guardian of the following monuments: the Oświęcim Castle, the defense tower (mid-13th century/XIV century), the tunnels under the castle hill (18th-20th century), the 19th century town hall and the underground relics of the 16th century town hall.
We describe, document, and tell stories about the residents and their city. We show that Oświęcim is a city where culture does not forget its history, but comes out to meet it.
Through new creative events and initiatives of local, national or international character, the image of the Auschwitz Castle Museum is consistently built.
We want our Museum to be a place with which the residents of our city and the Oświęcim area will identify and of which they will be proud.
