Let the wetlands buzz with life!
At the western border of Poland, where the waters of the Warta and Oder meet, a true bird kingdom exists – the “Ujście Warty” (Mouth of Warta River) National Park. The Park was established in 2001 and is so far the youngest in the country. Until three hundred years ago, this area was covered with boggy riparian forests. After years of river engineering, logging forests, draining land and grazing, open spaces of moist, fertile meadows have developed here. For many weeks of the year, significant areas of the Warta Mouth are under water. This attracts water and marsh birds for which the Park is an important breeding place in Europe. It is also a stop during bird migration and even a wintering destination. Such incredibly large numbers and variety of birds cannot be found in many parts of Poland . So far, about 280 bird species have been recorded here, of which 170 are breeding species. During spring and autumn migrations of geese alone, over 100 thousand individuals can be counted here.
