Mieszkowice
Description
The town of Mieszkowice is located in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship in Gryfino County on the route of the Szczecin - Kostrzyn railroad line. The western part of the municipality stretches along the Oder River, a natural Polish-German border.
A characteristic element of the town's material heritage is an almost complete ring of defensive walls dating back to the 13th-14th centuries, with a Powder Tower dating back to the 15th century, as well as fourteen shell and twelve rectangular chattels. Parts of the walls have undergone extensive restoration in recent years.
The city also retains a medieval urban layout of streets intersecting at right angles, where we come across single half-timbered buildings.
On the Freedom Square is mieszkowicki's market square surrounded by historic houses. In its central part stands the Monument to Mieszko I by Slawomir Lewinski, erected on a post-German pedestal in 1957 to commemorate the 1000th anniversary of Mieszkowice.
Mieszkowice Town Hall, owes its current appearance to a reconstruction in 1805, combined with moving the building in front of the church square.
One of the most interesting traces of Mieszkowice's past is the Transfiguration Church, whose history dates back to the 13th century. The interior of the church hides many interesting relics, including a medieval baptismal font probably from the 14th century and a coat of arms bell from 1756.
Almost half of the municipality's area is occupied by charming forests, providing shelter for numerous species of animals. They are looked after by the Mieszkowice Forestry Commission.
Among other things, a dendrological garden has been established on its grounds. On an area of 1.69 hectares 265 species of trees and shrubs of the temperate zone from all over the world have been gathered.
