Krystyna Krahelska a.k.a. "Danuta", Polish poet, scout, nurse, ethnographer, soldier of the Home Army, participant in the Warsaw Uprising. In the years 1943-1944 Krystyna Krahelska worked as a nurse in the district hospital in Wlodawa. As a nurse, she traveled to partisan units and trained girls for sanitary service. She posed for sculptor Ludwika Nitschowa for the statue of the Warsaw Mermaid, a symbol of the city's steadfast defense and the heroism of its residents. Visually, she perfectly matched the vision of the strong, heroic Mermaid. In addition, she wrote beautiful poems and sang phenomenally - like the legendary Siren.
