Church of the Holy Spirit
Description
The Church of the Holy Spirit, a foundation of Spytek III called Yaroslavl, was built on the site of a former wooden chapel that functioned at a home for the poor and orphans. The church was built in 1495 and was originally a wooden, single-nave structure connected to the hospital building. This temple survived until 1689, when a brick church was built in its place, existing to this day. The church was consecrated on August 7, 1690, giving it the invocation of Holy Spirit, St. Michael the Archangel (the city's patron saint) and St. Blazej. The main altar contained a painting of Our Lady and Child, considered miraculous, painted on canvas, which still exists today.
This Baroque temple had a defensive character. This is indicated by the thick walls, small, narrow windows and gun ports located under the eaves of the roof. The Church of the Holy Spirit was part of the city's defense system. It acted as a shield for the Krakow Gate. Near the church was a hospital building, as well as a garden, orchard, barns and stables. There was also a cemetery in the neighborhood. Most likely, it was used for burying people who died in the hospital attached to the church.
Since the Austrian annexation until 1944, the church served as a Protestant temple. Currently in the temple, in the altar niche, there is a painting painted on a board, showing the Crucified Christ, dated to the 17th-18th centuries. The polychrome decorating the temple, was made by the painter Wieslaw Wodnicki of Przemysl. In the Church of the Holy Spirit, to the left of the entrance to the chancel, is placed a 17th-century painting of Mary with the Child in the type of Hodegetria, called Merciful.
